Thank you gentlemen.   :thankyou:  It sounds easy and I know she will get frustrated and get it wrong so since I want the learning class   ;) She is technically challenged so best I send her shopping for the afternoon so I can concentrate and do it for her.  I have a standalone copy of SP2 - got it when Microsoft was giving them out. I may even have 2 copies.   As far as her security I would not use the one from her server but set it all with independent software - a set up like mine which works extremely well & without issues.  Once this is all done, I need to set up a maintenance schedule for her otherwise we will be repeating a reformat.   :(

Actually when I think of it , my computer is custom built & delivered to me without any installations and I had to put in the whole system - well I did get a wee bit of assistance from a knowledgeable neighbor but I basically did it myself.

If in a pickle, I know where to come.  :thumbsup1:  Reformat instructions posted here are clear and will be easy to follow by anyone using them.

If you have the recovery disc it will be easy peasy, an hour for preparation and about thirty minutes to load, a final hour to get it back as it was but faster.  Just back up the data/photos etc. that she needs.  Download new copies of the programmes like AV and Firewall.  Ensure she has the product key, and I would also recommend downloading a standalone copy of SP2 to throw on and ensure security. Let her know that if she wants I could walk her through it, or you, if you wish Madame  :angel12:

Sounds like a very good case of a reformat/reinstall job.
It's surprising just how easy it is.
That tutorial is about one of the best i've seen.... it's so easy to follow.

she took one look and said it was too technical for her to understand.

just tell her to take her time, i did my first reformat/reinstall on Win98 system... that was slightly harder.... but now we don't need boot discs so it's really easy.
Even easier for her if she gets you to do it.

Reformat and re-install of windows (XP)

Would the instructions you provided apply to an older Hewlett Packard .. there is a recovery disk that came with the computer.  My friend is using WinXP.

My friend's computer is so badly corrupted that nothing moves or works. It is slower than slow.  I can't even do a download & if it happens at all, it can take an hour and she is on high speed cable internet.   It takes half an hour or so to load at start up and almost the same time to bring up a program if it even happens. She does not have an overload of programs installed.    I feel she has a bad virus because her antivirus program has malfunctioned.  Actually her whole security package which is provided by her server is malfunctioning.  If I disconnect her from the internet I can manage to activate the odd program but once connected, click all you like, nothing happens.    From what I was able to determine her only recourse is to reformat.   I have never reformatted or had to a computer before and she is willing to let me have a go at it.

What are your recommendations?  I have asked her to join this forum but she has not done so and doubt she will - she took one look and said it was too technical for her to understand. :)

Thanks.
