Google: Our brilliant Spectre fix dodges performance hit, so you should all use it

Google wants the whole industry to adopt its Retpoline fixes for Variant 2 of the Meltdown-Spectre bugs.
That fix, called Retpoline, addresses Variant 2 of the two Spectre CPU attacks called 'branch target injection'.
Variant 2 is considered by Microsoft and Google to be the trickiest speculative execution vulnerability to fix as it's the only one that does cause a significant hit on CPU performance.

a. I did this and the computer just froze. Image attached. Didn't blue screen but stayed that way for more than an hour and a half as I waited for it to do anything. I didn't find any memory.dmp file since it didn't blue screen.

b. Decrypted again and windows boots back up. Will email file to support in 5 minutes.

Hello dorioo,

Two scenarios might be causing this:

a. Windows experiences a BSOD, but it's configured to restart automatically. Please follow the steps here : https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/69012-enable-disable-bsod-automatic-restart-windows-10-a.html#option1 to make sure your system is configured to save minidump files. Disable automatic restarts to see if BSOD is happening or not. If it does, please send us a minidump.

2. Windows bootloader is missing (less likely, since you are able to boot into Windows after you decrypt). To check if that's the case, please send us system information generated by BCVE at Help --> Send System Information (make sure UEFI files check box is set).

Sincerely,
Jetico Technical Support Team

I've started experiencing problems with v3.77.03 and Windows 10 Home version 1709 and OS Build 16299.98

1. I was on some previous version before 1709 and everything was working well.
2. Windows tried to upgrade to 1709 and failed because of the volume encryption.
3. I then decrypted the hard drive and ran the update. 1709 installed without issues.
4. When I encrypt the drive with 3.77.03 now and reboot, it asks me for a password (good). Once I enter the password, it reboots and asks me for the password again (not good). Continues forever.

To fix it, I took out the hard drive and decrypted it using the bestcrypt GUI on another computer. Once decrypted, I'm able to put it back into the laptop and have it boot normally into Windows. I've done this 3 times already hoping that the encryption process would work but maybe something is not yet right with how the encryption is working with this latest version of Windows.

Hello Kariaki,

Support for Windows 10 Fall Creators update is introduced in v.3.77.2 available here:

BestCrypt package: https://www.jetico.com/bcryptSetup.exe
Standalone version: https://www.jetico.com/bcve_setup.exe

Please let us know if it solves the problem for you.

Sincerely,

Hello Kariaki,

We were able to reproduce the BSOD. If you had saved Rescue information after encrypting, please use Rescue ISO / USB to remove encryption. If you had not, please contact support@jetico.com for further advice.

We are looking into the problem and will provide a solution ASAP.

Sincerely,
Jetico Technical Support Team

Hello Jetico,

yes latest BCVE was installed on a clean 1709 (x64 iso from MS obtained via media creator tool) on a single hard drive system. It's BIOS based.

Windows creates always 2 partitions: one for recovery (about 450 MB) and system partition to install windows which has been encrypted. After I entered the password, the blue screen shows after 2-5 seconds.

best,

Jetico

Hello Kariaki,

Just to clarify, you were not upgrading a BCVE-encrypted system from 1703 to 1709, you were installing BCVE anew on a clean 1709, encrypting (was it System or Boot volume?) it, rebooting and then getting a BSOD after entering BCVE password? Is that correct?

Sincerely,

Tried latest bcve embed in bestcrypt 9.03.5 on a fresh installation of windows Fall update (RS3).

After password has been entered at boot, the attached screen showed up.

Tested on a BIOS system (not UEFI)
