If the archive was created with version 2, it would be possible.
To be more exact, the problem would hardly happen for version-2-archives.

Therefore, when BCArchive v2 is installed, it recommeds users to re-create all the archives with the new version.

Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately, the file was created a long time ago on another computer which is now formatted. I will not be able to find temporary files from when the archive was created. This is my backup copy :/

Is there any other way? Is it possible to use a HEX editor to remove some corrupt segments and then recover at least some files?

Error 101 happens when the archive's file system (the chain of encrypted clusters) is corrupted somehow.
When such message appears, BCArchive (since version 2) offers to rebuild
the  file system - for archives created by version 2.
For older archives, unfortunately, such recovering is not possible.

Let me suggest the following:

When an archive (say, "archive.bca") is opened, BCArchive creates
temporary folder "archive.bca.bct". It contains numbers of start sectors of
the root folder and of the files/folders that are changed.
It contains .dat files and .cls files.

The chain of encrypted clusters is lost in the following cases:
- if these files were deleted;
- if the archive or the temp files were moved to other location;
- if the files were corrupted;

If you want to restore the data, you should try to find the folder in the
location where the archive
resides (or resided, if you moved the archive).
In Explorer, if your hidden files are not visible, please set the option
'Show hidden files and folders'
(in Tools-->>Folder Options-->View tab) and try to find the temporary folder
"your_archive_name.bca.bct".
(By the way, it may be in your  recycle bin).
If you are able to find it anywhere  - just locate it at
the archive's folder.

If you are not able to find it, please  use some file recovering utility (in
case the files were deleted)
to find files:
~COT.DAT
~COTCopy.dat
CN*.CLS

If all necessary files are recovered, BCArchive will be able to open the
archive.

Error 101 in opening archive
« Reply #1 on: June 24, 2009, 09:08:08 AM »
Hi,

I'm trying to open a BCA file but I'm getting the error message "Error 101 in opening archive" after I've entered my password. If I enter the wrong password, I get the "The password you've entered is invalid" message, so BCArchive obviously recognizes the password but fails to open the file.

The file is rather old (2+ years) and 600+ MB. I can open other BCA files created at the same time.

Any suggestions?

/Erik
