ic so as long as moving within the same drive or partition C:\ to C:\ should be alright.
Q1) If lets say I have a original file which I overwrite or update the file then I get bcwipe to wipe that file. The latest contents that are overwritten in that file should already be wiped by BCWipe but what about the original contents of the file would there be residue or traces of it in that harddisk. Do I have to do a wipe free space using bc wipe for the entire hard disk?

Q2) Bug in BCwipe?? When would BCWipe not wipe a file? I entered a situation where the file is being wiped by BCWipe(it is being assesssed by web server concurrently) to zero 0 bytes then it says file cannot be completedly wiped beacuse it is being busied by the system....after it wiped it down to zero bytes from 30 or 40 MB file. That file is being used by teh system but bcwipe did wipe it down to zero bytes then say cannot completely wiped the fiel. The 0 byte files is still remaining in my system...... Is this a bug?

Hi.

A file has two parts: file contents and file name (reference).

If C:\FilesStillInUseFolder\ and C:\DeletemeFolder\ belong to the same volume (partition),
old file name entry will be deleted in C:\FilesStillInUseFolder\, new file name will be created in C:\DeletemeFolder\. The file contents will stay in its original place, but it will be accessible via
the new name only. If you wipe files in C:\DeletemeFolder\ periodically, the new name and file
contents will be wipied.

If C:\FilesStillInUseFolder\ and C:\DeletemeFolder\ belong to different volumes (partitions), then
rename operation will consist of copying and deleting the original file. In this case the old file contents
will not be wiped.

I am using BCWipe to securely wipe files on a periodic basis say every 1 Hrs on my windows system.
It will wipe all files in the C:\DeletemeFolder\
If I have files in say C:\FilesStillInUseFolder\    then use java.io.File renameTo() in my program to move the files from C:\FilesStillInUseFolder\ to C:\DeletemeFolder\ for BCwipe to do wiping of the files securely... Would there be traces of the file content in the file system since the files are moved?  By moving the file using java.io.File renameTo() would the file contents still be in C:\FilesStillInUseFolder\? Thanks for any help rendered.
