Well, an unavoidable consequence: HP (Hewlett Packard Company) is Smokey's Security Weblog 2010 Hall of Shame Awardee. HP fully deserved this prestigious Award, more info here:

i have just done a re start on my laptop, and the sign in the right hand corner that stated evaluaton copy.build 6002 has now gone,
i think its because i unstalled the beta and reinstalled as advised by smokey the service pack 2

I'm pleased you solved the issue, but again, HP miserably failed.

i place the link in every email i sent them for this page and also informed them on the phone, i advised them to take a look, i hope they did,

In the meawhile i'm convinced they don't take a look at all to this thread, they have a very ignoring attitude.

I think it's safe to say........
The underlying message here is.........
DON'T BUY Hewlett-Packard laptops .. or anything else by HP.

We here at 'Smokeys' don't normally knock companies like this... but for HP, we'll make an exception.

so far, 230 members and guests have read this..... i hope HP take note.

Just found this, which is interesting:
Quote
The beta
version of Service Pack 2 for Vista and Windows Server 2008 is just an
evaluation and Microsoft stressed that the general public should not install
it until it is done being tested but you can download it off their web site.
So that is why it is an Evaluation Copy.

So.... HP should NOT have allowed this to be sent out to customers.

Fully agreed.

HP installed that beta Vista SP2 crap on all kind of boxes, not just on laptops, so your advice should be: don't buy ANY HP box. You never know what kind of OS will be pre-installed, maybe it is a beta, maybe not. When you are lucky it regard a final version, but even in that case the issue of miserable HP support remain. I mentioned just some of the possible issues when you buy a HP box, be prepared on the unexpected.

thank you both for your replys
i do agree with starbuck, all faith i had in hp has GONE
i would never purchase another hp product again,
it has been a very distressing time trying to sort this problem out, and if i honest even when i was at work i was worried incase my laptop had lost the vista's system,
i understand that micosoft are a big company but they just dont offer you support, they seem to be fed-up that i had rung them,
thank you for allowing me to post the emails they sent me,
i would advise anybody else who has this problem to do as smokey suggested first, and that is to uninstall the service pack 2 and then reinstall and not to get themselves into a state like i did, its hard when your understanding of how computers run is about the size of a nat, but then thats why this forum is here to take the scary stuff, and help make you more confident, with your understanding.

A real horror story Angela!  ???

It also show that:

1. To HP the expression 'after sales' is a blaspheme.
2. HP support department is crap.
3. HP call their customers 'valued', factual are in their eyes customers nasty, boring and irritating people.

Keep in mind, it isn't a Microsoft Corp. issue, solely HP is responsible for the pre-install of a beta service pack.

Note: normally the posting of emails is not allowed on this board, however in your special case we made an exception. It is the only way to show the reader what they can expect from HP in case they need support.

Fix: http://deepxw.blogspot.com/2008/12/remove-watermark-v03-build-20081210.html

Like i told before, you can also try to uninstall that beta sp2 and install the final sp2: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791

Fwiw, to me the issue of the pre-install of a beta services pack by HP is not ended, it is incredible that a respected company like HP install beta services packs on their boxes. I expect such irresponsible behavior from a shabby company, not from HP...

Therefore, story will be continued.

Hi Angela,
i'm not surprised that you are unhappy.
HP are acting very irresponsibly.
The fault obviously lies with them, it was their system and you bought it in good faith.
No copy of an OS should need to be reactivated like this... somewhere along the line, a dodgy copy has been added to this laptop.
We'll see what Smokey has to say when he returns, but if you get no joy from HP..... next step would be 'the trading standards'.... i'm sure they'll be very interested in this.
