If I recall correctly, the default rules are supposed to allow system services to communicate.
But in general, yes, JPFW isn't ideal for casual users.

The core features are nice, unmatched by any other Windows firewall I know, but there's a lot to improve in the GUI, and the firewall is buggy in some aspects, at least on Windows 8.

Firewall installation nightmare

I know Jetico Personal Firewall is now free, so there's little grounds for complaint but still.... I've just managed to get rid of the thing. Upon installation and reboot I was confronted by dozens of dialogue boxes asking me to allow each individual windows service access through the firewall...followed by all my installed apps and god knows what else. It was impossible to get back to work on my PC, then it locked up when trying to uninstall it.

It seems very ill conceived to do this to a new user. How am i supposed to know which services to allow? there was no guide or help with each pop-up. It was the most frustrating experience i've had in a while. Thank god it didn't cost anything. may i suggest a more user-friendly start up process that lets the PC actually boot up and then makes suggestions as to what can be allowed and what might be a risk ?

At the moment its terrible in my opinion and puts me off Jetico actually :-(
